Internship at Indiana Medical History Museum
Overview:
My internship was based around health and safety upkeep in the museum. I have learned how to identify, research, and manage hazardous chemical collections and fluid-preserved specimens that pose health and safety hazards to the museum. I have learned about the identification and mitigation of toxins in museum collections around the world and have done in-depth research on spill response of unknown chemicals (below) and on uranium glass.
Outcomes:
-
I have helped to create a catalog and assessment of the chemical collections at the IMHM
-
I helped do research on the chemicals in the collection.
-
I learned about cellulose Nitrate in film reels and how to test film to see if they are cellulose Nitrate.
-
I was able to document XRF testing and work with Environmental Scientists at Purdue University.
While working with chemical hazards, I wear PPE and use a bucket when transferring chemicals to protect myself and the collections.
